Man killed in head-on crash near Portage la Prairie

WINNIPEG – A 66-year-old Winnipeg man is dead after a serious crash on a busy stretch of road near Portage la Prairie, Man.

A pickup truck towing a camper was travelling east on the Highway 1 bypass near Highway 204 at about 12:15 p.m. Tuesday when a westbound minivan crossed the ditch in the centre of the highway and hit the truck head-on, RCMP said.

The Winnipegger who was driving the minivan died at the scene, police said.

The 61-year-old Ste. Anne man who was driving the pickup was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening lower-body injuries. His wife was airlifted by STARS air ambulance to Health Sciences Centre with serious lower-body injuries. She was listed in stable condition.

There was also a dog in the truck. It was taken to a local kennel.
