SASKATOON – The Saskatchewan government has awarded a contract for meat inspection services for provincially-inspected processing plants to Saskatoon’s Food Centre.

According to the province, the Saskatchewan Food Industry Development Centre Inc. (Food Centre) received the new contract because they have the necessary resources and capacity to effectively administer the program.

The centre’s expertise includes product development, interim processing, extrusion technology, quality assurance and food safety education and training.

The Food Centre says it is committed to being a leading centre of excellence in R&D, processing, extrusion and food safety training by working with Saskatchewan’s agriculture industry.

“Under the supervision of the provincial government, I am confident that the Food Centre will deliver rigorous meat inspection services to ensure high-quality and safe Saskatchewan meat products,” said Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart.

In 2011, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) announced it was returning provincial meat inspection responsibilities to BC, Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

Starting Jan. 1, the Food Centre will take over meat inspection services for Saskatchewan’s 12 provincially-inspected meat processing facilities.

CFIA will continue inspection services at federally registered facilities in the province.
