TORONTO — The drummer for British pop group Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark has publicly praised Toronto paramedics and hospital staff for saving his life.

Malcolm Holmes, 53, collapsed July 19 on stage at the Danforth Music Hall when he suffered a heart attack.

The band cancelled three remaining shows on its tour.

“I owe my life to quick thinking members of our crew & band and the Toronto Fire Dept Paramedics who performed CRP and Defibrillation to bring me back to life,” Holmes said in a post on the OMD website.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the people who have helped with my recovery and getting me back home safely …. Toronto Fire Dept Paramedics, Nurses & Dr’s in ICU & CCU at Toronto Eastern General Hospital [and] Dr Lashevsky and his team at Sunnybrook Hospital Toronto.”

Holmes, who flew out of Toronto on July 30, described the experience as “deeply traumatic” but said he was touched by the “messages of love and support” from fans.

OMD was a new wave hit in the early ’80s with hits like “So In Love” and “If You Leave.”
