Witnesses told Global News they heard gunshots just before midnight in the area of 207 Street and 53A Avenue.

Cpl. Frank Jang with the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team confirmed a 22-year-old man was shot and killed inside a car at the complex.

Another man, also in his early 20s, was shot but was taken to hospital and was expected to survive.

The car, a blue Honda Civic, was covered in at least 12 bullet holes.

Dozens of yellow evidence markers covered the ground Wednesday morning.

“It is very early in the investigation, but this has all the hallmarks of a targeted hit,” Jang said. “Our victim was known to police and we believe that his murder may be linked to the drug trade.”

Jang said investigators are still not sure if the shooting is linked to the recent Lower Mainland gang conflict.

About 14 minutes after that shooting, Surrey RCMP received a report about a burning vehicle in the area of 180 Street and 19A Avenue, near Redwood Park, Jang added.

Officers were treating it as suspicious given the proximity and time of the two events, he said, but were not sure yet if they are connected.

IHIT is asking anyone with photos or videos from the area at the time of the shooting or from the Surrey location to contact them.
