The bail hearing for one of two teens charged with first-degree murder in the death of Calgary police Sgt. Andrew Harnett was adjourned until Wednesday morning.
On Tuesday, the Crown prosecutor said if the youth accused in the case was convicted, the prosecution would seek that they are sentenced as an adult.
Prosecutor Douglas Taylor also opposed bail for the young man, who was 17 years old at the time of Harnett’s death.
“The Crown’s position is that the young person ought to be detained for both the safety and protection of the public,” said Taylor. “It’s a complicated case with a lot at stake and a lot of evidence.”
Harnett, 37, was hit and killed by a vehicle while conducting a traffic stop on New Year’s Eve. He was a 12-year member of the Calgary Police Service.
The bail hearing was adjourned Tuesday and the judge said he will likely reserve his decision.
Amir Abdulrahman, 19, and the youth who cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act have been charged with first-degree murder in connection to Harnett’s death.
Abdulrahman is scheduled to appear in Calgary court on Feb. 4.
