Halton Regional Police say a man has been taken into custody after an hours-long standoff with officers at an Oakville home on Friday.
Insp. Ivan L’Ortye told reporters late Friday that officers were called to the area of Lakeshore Road West between Fourth Line and Birch Hill Lane before 1:25 p.m. after someone reported hearing gunfire.
He said officers found two people, a female and a male, barricaded inside their home.
Police tweeted just before 2 p.m. asking residents in the area to shelter “until further notice.” Staff at a nearby private school, Appleby College, reported they were instructed to place the campus in a hold-and-secure and that all staff and students on site were accounted for and safe.
Just after 3:30 p.m., police said the female was safely escorted out of the home and that crisis negotiators were working to get the second person out.
L’Ortye said hours later officers smelled what they believed was natural gas, requiring gas to be disconnected to the home and electricity to shut off to nine properties.
It was at around 10:30 p.m. when the standoff came to an end.
“Eventually we were able to locate the person in the upstairs level of the home where that person was arrested and taken into custody,” L’Ortye said, adding the investigation is still ongoing.
“We were able to establish communications with the male quite early in this call. However, the male refused to come out and therefore we had our standoff situation.
“We’re quite fortunate with all of our partners working together that we were able to resolve this.”
It’s not clear what charges might be laid in connection with the incident.
