Laura Zilke grew up near Stratford, Ontario, home of the world-famous Shakespearean festival. But it was the love of the small screen, not the stage that had Laura dreaming of sporting one of the red jackets worn by the reporters at her local news station (CKCO).
After graduating from a joint venture, broadcast and communications program at York University and Seneca College, Laura went back to her hometown to get her start in radio news. Shortly after, she headed east and found herself, with CHEX TV microphone in hand, reporting on the streets of Peterborough, Ontario.
With some luck, good timing and country-raised determination, Laura worked her way through the halls of Global Ontario’s newsroom and eventually landed a reporting position on Global TV’s National show, Moneywise. There she met some of Canada’s most promising entrepreneurs and delve into the pocketbooks of Canadians as far away as Japan.
Then, in the autumn of 2005, Laura made the move into the Global Ontario newsroom as a general assignment reporter. Since then, she’s made her way across Southern Ontario and beyond to deliver the news of the day – and loves the fact that every day brings a new and different story to tell.
Although Laura was never able to don her local news stations’ crimson jacket, you may spot her on the streets of Toronto in her own red coat.
