Community, police gather for support after Westwood tragedy

WINNIPEG — Police victim services officers reached out to help in those in the Westwood neighbourhood who needed to talk after the Gibson family tragedy shook the city.

Several counselling agencies were present for the support session at the Kirkfield-Westwood Community Centre on Sansome Avenue Wednesday evening.

“We’re all mothers and sisters and fathers and neighbours, and so if a tragedy like this doesn’t touch people then … I guess the question is, how are we looking after each other?” said Cindy Willette, who works in the victim service department with the Winnipeg Police Service.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“The other thing is, is there anything that can be done so that we can possibly minimize the chance that something like this is going to happen again?” she said.
