“Compulsive voyeur” handed 9 month conditional sentence

A Vancouver man who posed as a photographer in order to secretly film models in the nude has been handed a 9-month conditional sentence in court today.

The conditional sentence will mean Matthew Power, who prosecutors have called a “compulsive voyeur”, will not serve any jail time.

The 37-year-old was charged and pleaded guilty in 2011 to 14 counts of secretly recording nudity. He advertised for 17 to 23 year-old models on a website Model Mayhem and Craigslist, bringing him to his home for fake photo shoots. The models were unknowingly filmed and photographed with hidden cameras as they changed their clothes. The photos were only for his private use.

Power was released on bail but had to head back to court for breaching one of his bail conditions – not to photograph any woman who wasn’t a family member.

Since Power breached his bail conditions Crown counsel pushed for jail time but the defense’s lawyer said a conditional sentence would be sufficient because Power showed remorse and isn’t a high risk of re-offending.
