FOND-DU-LAC, Sask. – The chief of the Denesuline First Nation says evacuees from a northern Saskatchewan community could return home this week.

Chief Earl Lidguerre says conditions are improving in Fond-du-Lac and only a few hot spots remain at the wildfire on the other side of Lake Athabasca.

Fifty square kiliometres of land has burned.

Lidguerre says if conditions stay as they are, many of the 200 residents who were evacuated to Prince Albert could return home in 24 to 72 hours.

He also addressed criticism from some that the fire should have been dealt with earlier.

“We have a procedure in place and all procedures as we all know is not perfect,” said Lidguerre.

“We were monitoring it since day one and when the time came, that’s when we made the decision to evacuate.”

Among those evacuated over the weekend were infants, seniors and those with respiratory illnesses.

“We have some tweaking to do with our procedures,” Lidguerre added.
