Dogs severely injured at Edworthy Park

CALGARY – A Calgary couple is warning people about potentially unsafe pathways in Edworthy Park, after their dogs were severely injured falling off a cliff.

It happened last Tuesday on the south side of the park at an off-leash area.

Celia Sweeny and James Larose were visiting Edworthy Park for the first time, along with their dogs Vinnie and Stella.

As the dogs were playing, they ran into some bushes and fell off a cliff near the parking lot.

Stella, a Goldren Retriever/Cross, had to be euthanized – while Vinne, a Great Pyrenees, required surgeries for his dislocated hip and internal injuries.

On Friday, the City of Calgary put up temporary fencing around the cliff, which is hard to see because of the bushes surrounding it.

“You have no idea that the cliff is there,” says James. “If we had known then we wouldn’t have brought [our dogs], because we can’t control every single move they make.”

James and Celia are happy the city took quick action, but wonder why the parks department wasn’t aware of the hazard in the first place.

“We came back on Friday to see it again,” says Celia. “It looked even bigger than we thought.”

“Unfortunately, my dog had to lose his her life,” she added. ”I would be horrified to hear it happened to a kid.”

A spokesman with the City of Calgary says they are looking at putting up permanent fencing and signage around the trail.
