Starting today subway riders can subscribe for email notices to be sent to their inboxes to alert them to delays or stoppages in service.

Messages will be sent when their is an anticiapated delay of up to 15 minutes on the subway lines to give riders the chance to change their routes and make alternate plans, said Toronto Transit Commission chair councillor Adam Giambrone (Davenport).

While it might not help those standing on the platform in a station, it could assist riders just running out the door or about the leave work make "intelligent decisions" about their next move, Mr. Giambrone said.

Eventually the service will be expanded to provide text messages on surface routes as well.

The email notifications are just one of a host of service and technology improvements aimed at putting scheduling information at the fingertips of TTC passengers.

These include the roll-out of a next-train arrival alerts on the platform that count down the minutes to the next subway. It began in Dundas Station and should be rolled out to all subway stations by the end of 2009. A next street car arrival LED board has been installed on the Spadina street car line and should make it to all street car and bus stops over the course of the next two years as well.

An online trip planner will be unveiled this summer.
