Strong May earnings in Saskatchewan; StatsCan

SASKATOON – Average weekly earnings in Saskatchewan increased 4.8 per cent in May compared to the previous year’s month, according to preliminary numbers from Statistics Canada.

The province’s increase was almost twice the national average of 2.5 per cent, with widespread growth across a number of industrial sectors.

“Earnings in Saskatchewan are rising – that’s because there’s more opportunities for better-paying employment,” said Economy Minister Bill Boyd.

Average weekly earnings in the province were $941 in May, well ahead of the $914 posted nationally. Saskatchewan earnings were $944 in April 2013, which was an all-time high for that month.

Among the provinces, Saskatchewan’s earnings were the second highest, only behind Alberta with $1,114.

The number of Saskatchewan employees (seasonally adjusted) grew by 1.6 per cent in May over the previous year’s month.

On a year-over-year basis, weekly earnings rose 2.5 per cent in Canada. The construction and administrative and support services posted the highest earnings among the sectors.
