Ice at North Pole melts, forms lake

Santa Claus now has a swimming pool.

Recent webcams based at the North Pole in the Arctic captured an ice melt that took place over the past few weeks, resulting in the formation of a shallow lake.

It’s not that unusual to see the Arctic melt during the summer. Melting ice often forms these melt ponds.

However, the U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center reported the 11th lowest observation of June sea ice since 1979. Temperatures have also been about one to two degrees warmer in the Arctic this year.

Meanwhile, scientists are watching an Arctic cyclone which is tearing up more sea ice.
