Road trip! Curiosity takes longest drive of mission, seen from orbit

TORONTO – It may not seem like much, but for the Martian rover Curiosity, the trip it took across the Red Planet on Sunday was a long one.

Curiosity tumbled across Gale Crater driving twice as far as it has on any other day so far: 100.3 meters.

So far, Curiosity has driven less than two kilometres during its entire mission.

On Wednesday, NASA also released an image from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter showing Curiosity on the Martian surface. Its tracks can be seen in this high resolution photograph.

In this image, Curiosity appears as a blue dot near the lower right corner of this enhanced-colour image by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The image was taken on June 27, 2013. NASA/JPL-Caltech/Univ. of Arizona
