Mike Edgell

From the Olympics in Italy, to life in South Africa 10 years after the end of apartheid, Mike has covered many significant stories around the world and is know for his innovative storytelling.

Here in North America, Mike’s most notable stories include the RCMP shooting rampage in Mayerthorpe, Karla Homolka’s release in Quebec, the school massacre in Minnesota, Hurricane Rita in Texas and Louisiana and Hurricane Wilma in Florida. He was also on the ground in Mexico City during the volatile Presidential elections. He twittered from Obama’s Inauguration in Washington and covered the US President’s first international visit to Ottawa. Mike even had the fortunate pleasure of chatting with Queen Elizabeth when covering her Royal Visit in Saskatchewan.

Career highlights include being a finalist for a national investigative journalism award for an investigation into stolen military weapons, and the sole witness in a dismemberment trial where his investigation helped convict the killer. Mike also had the only Canadian TV interview with Michael Phelps the night he set the all-time record at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China.

Although Mike has covered stories about many prominent people and events, his greatest passion is to tell the stories of everyday people, "In other jobs, I’ve interviewed some well known people from J-Lo to J-Leno, but the stories I value the most are the deeply personal tales about "real" people in extraordinary circumstances."

Born in Montreal, Mike Edgell has spent most of his life in Southern and Eastern Ontario. He joined Global in 2005.
