TORONTO – NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory has released a true-colour image of Saturn and Earth together.

NASA’S Cassini spacecraft imaged the pair together for the first time in natural colour on Friday, July 19. A worldwide “Wave at Saturn” event was organized by the space agency where it encouraged people to wave at the planet as it was photographing our planet nearly 1.5 billion km away.

In a news release, Linda Spilker, Cassini project scientist at NASA’S JPL said, “We can’t see individual continents or people in this portrait of Earth, but this pale blue dot is a succinct summary of who we were on July 19.

“Cassini’s picture reminds us how tiny our home planet is in the vastness of space, and also testifies to the ingenuity of the citizens of this tiny planet to send a robotic spacecraft so far away from home to study Saturn and take a look-back photo of Earth.”
