Decision Calgary: Ward 9 candidates

Ward 9 includes the communities of Acadia, Alyth/Bonnybrook, Bridgeland/Riverside, Burns Industrial, Dover, Erlton, Fairview, Fairview Industrial, Foothills, Golden Triangle, Greenview Industrial Park, Inglewood, Manchester, Manchester Industrial, Ogden, Parkhill/Stanley Park, Ramsay, Renfrew, Rideau Park, Riverbend, Roxboro, Section 23, Shepard Industrial, South Foothills, Starfield, Tuxedo Park, Valleyfield and Winston Heights/Mountview.

The ward is home to Inglewood, Calgary’s oldest neighbourhood, as well as the Calgary Zoo, the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary and the Edmonton Trail business area.

FAST FACT: Even though it is one of the city’s largest wards in area, it has one of the smallest populations due to industrial neighbourhoods.

Current Councillor: Gian-Carlo Carra is seeking a second term.

THE CANDIDATES

GIAN-CARLO CARRA (incumbent) was a longtime community activist when he was first elected in the 2010 civic election. He won by just under 500 votes to beat runner-up Mike Pal. Prior to his election, Carra was an urban designer. He is also a former president of the Inglewood Community Association. As a councillor, he has kept constituents informed with regular posts on his website, including videos of community meetings and events.

His priorities include transforming the planning and development process, creating diverse communities with a mix of families, young people and seniors, and encouraging residents, businesses and institutions to collaborate to create stronger and richer communities.

JORDAN KATZ has been a Conservative candidate in both federal and provincial elections. This is the first time he has run in a civic election. Katz says his number one priority, if elected, is to work on reversing the decision not to return a $52 million tax surplus to taxpayers. His other priorities include keeping property taxes in check and reducing traffic congestion by building the southeast leg of the LRT and expanding Deerfoot Trail.

RICHARD WILKIE is controller at Xerex Exploration who specializes in financial risk management.  He has been involved in politics at the provincial level for more than 30 years and has served as chief financial officer for a non-profit organization. He has been a member of  Mount Royal University’s Bachelor of Applied Business and Entrepreneurship Advisory Committee and has been an instructor in small business management.

He believes the current council is not managing tax dollars wisely and that property tax increases have been too high. He believes Calgarians should be consulted to a greater degree than they are now about major projects, such as a new central library in the East Village.
