Decision Calgary: Ward 8 candidates

Ward 8 includes the communities of Bankview, Beltline, Cliff Bungalow, Downtown Commercial Core, Downtown West End, Elbow Park, Killarney/Glengarry, Mission, Mount Royal Lower, Richmond, Rosscarrock, Scarboro, Scarboro/Sunalta West, Shaganappi, South Calgary, Spruce Cliff, Sunalta, Upper Mount Royal, Westgate and Wildwood.

Ward 8 is home to the Stampede Grounds, Edworthy Park and 17th Ave S.W.

FAST FACTS:  Nearly one third of the ward’s  population is within the 25-34 age range. Ward 8 also has fewer children than any other ward in Calgary .

Current Councillor: John Mar is seeking his third term.

THE CANDIDATES 

JOHN MAR was first elected in 2007. He won the last election in 2010 with almost 52 per cent of the votes.  Mar has campaigned to put more police officers on the streets, and to increase social and crime-prevention programs. He has also been active in efforts to eliminate homelessness. Mar devotes his spare time to the Mustard Seed and its affordable housing initiatives which look at the root causes of homelessness in our city.

Last year he withdrew from the Conservative nomination race in the federal riding of Calgary Centre in the byelection to replace MP Lee Richardson.

IAN NEWMAN, the business development manager for a restoration company, is running for city council for the first time. Newman is a supporter of taxi license reform, bicycle infrastructure, city transit expansion and a more transparent Parking Authority. He believes a plebiscite should have been held on the $52 million property tax surplus. He is also in favour of secondary suites to improve density.

EVAN WOOLLEY most recently worked as a program coordinator for the City of Calgary’s public art program. He has also been a community relations advisor with the city and has worked for Enerplus as a media relations advisor.

Woolley has been a member of the the Mayor’s Civic Engagement Committee and the city’s Youth Engagement Committee. He was a board member of the Cliff Bungalow-Mission Community Association and has volunteered with the Sled Island Music Festival.

He supports campaign finance reform with more transparency- revealing donor lists and the amount of contributions.
