Decision Calgary: Ward 6 candidates

Ward 6 includes the communities of Aspen Woods, Christie Park, Coach Hill, Cougar Ridge, Discovery Ridge, Glamorgan, Glenbrook, Glendale, Patterson Heights, Signal Hill, Springbank Hill, Strathcona Park and West Springs.

It is home to the west LRT, which opened in 2012 after several years of construction.

FAST FACT: Ward 6 is one of the fastest growing wards in Calgary.

Current Councillor: Richard Pootmans is seeking his second term.

THE CANDIDATES

RICHARD POOTMANS (incumbent) was first elected in 2010 when he captured more than 30 per cent of the votes. Prior to his election in 2010, he co-owned a business and worked in the oil industry.

He sits on several city hall committees and has served on numerous community boards.  Pootmans is married to Frances Wright, CEO and publisher of MOMpreneur® magazine.

Pootmans is concerned about traffic congestion in the ward and would like to see improvements made to Highway 8 to discourage short cutting through the ward’s neighbourhoods. He also advocates for more infrastructure and community programs.

JOE CONNELLY is a former Calgary alderman for Ward 6 who ran unsuccessfully for mayor in the 2010 civic election. Before he was elected as alderman in 2007, Connelly was vice president of sales and service for Tourism Calgary. His fiscally conservative campaign platform includes curbing city spending and property tax increases.

JAMES ISTVANFFY is an instructor at the University of Calgary and Mount Royal University. He ran unsuccessfully for Ward 6 alderman in 2001 and 2007. He has volunteered with The Military Museums and the Federation of Calgary Communities. His top campaign issues include traffic, transit and curbing property tax increases.
