Decision Calgary: Ward 4 candidates

Ward 4 includes the communities of Beddington Heights, Country Hills, Edgemont, Greenview, Greenview Industrial Park, Hidden Valley, Highland Park, Huntington Hills, MacEwan, North Haven, North Haven Upper, Sandstone Valley and Thorncliffe.

The ward is home to Nose Hill Park, one of the largest municipal parks in North America.

FAST FACT: Ward 4 is the only Calgary ward to experience a population decrease in the most recent census.

Current Councillor: Gael Macleod is seeking her second term in office.

THE CANDIDATES

GAEL MACLEOD (incumbent) was first elected in the 2010 election, winning over a quarter of the votes to defeat runner-up Sean Chu.

Prior to the election, Macleod was the executive director of the Alberta Real Estate Foundation and worked as a bank mortgage officer and then branch administrator. She has also worked for the provincial Treasury Department and has managed her own financial services company.

Macleod has volunteered with the Beddington Community Association, sat on the board of directors for Attainable Homes Calgary Corporation and has worked with various non-profit organizations. She was chair of the Board of Directors of the Calgary Community Lottery Board, which annually allocated $15.2 million in provincial lottery revenues to various non-profit organizations.

Her campaign platform includes promoting affordable housing and the non-profit sector.

SEAN CHU first ran for election in Ward 4 in 2010 capturing more than 20 per cent of the votes. He is a long-time Calgary police officer who most recently worked with the Community Outreach unit. Chu is also an entrepreneur, owning real estate and hospitality businesses.

He has a long record of volunteerism, including two terms as director of the Federation of Calgary Communities.

His priorities include improving city services, supporting local business, crime prevention partnerships, improving commutes and access to transit and support for single parents, seniors and lower income residents.

Chu is a recipient of the Calgary Police Service Distinguished Service award, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medal and the Alberta Centennial medal.

MICHAEL HARTFORD says now that he has recovered from major spinal surgery, he is ready to work towards ensuring the future of Calgary. Support for lower income families is a key part of his campaign platform. He also wants to work to improve building codes and says he plans to contact contractor and television personality Mike Holmes to see if they can work together. Hartford also supports a crackdown on illegal suites.

BLAIR HOUSTON is a small business owner who has lived in Ward 4 for over 30 years. He has volunteered with Calgary Parks & Recreation and has coached minor hockey. He was the first person to receive the Calgary Volunteer Award of Recognition.

Houston is campaigning on a platform of curbing tax dollar waste at city hall. He also believes a $52 million tax surplus should be returned to Calgary taxpayers.
