Slav Kornik was born in Poland, he then spent a year in Germany before moving to Edmonton, Alberta at the age of five with his parents and brother.
Slav spent the next eighteen years of his life in the city of champions before heading down highway sixteen to complete his N.A.I.T. television practicum in Lloydminster. He was hired at the border city’s television station soon after finishing his practicum. He spent the next sixteen months in Lloyd as both a cameraman and sports reporter/anchor. He made the move to CHCA News in October 2006 as the new sports videographer/weekend anchor.
Slav’s enthusiasm for sports started at an early age as he played everything from soccer to baseball to volleyball. But in junior high school he developed a passion for basketball and began playing year round. Slav played four years for the N.A.I.T. Ooks where he won two A.C.A.C. titles and one national championship where he was named tournament M.V.P. (not that he likes to brag…wait a second, yes he does).
Since he’s hung up the basketball shoes Slav’s been staying in shape by jogging and lifting weights. He’s even played a bit of pond hockey with friends over the past couple of years, something he rarely did as a youngster (and he calls himself a Canadian). When asked about his ability on the ice, Slav says “I really need to learn how to skate better…really, really badly.”
Slav is enjoying Red Deer and covering the city’s wonderful sports scene. He’s excited to be part of the CHCA News sports department and happy to be in Central Alberta.
