EDMONTON – Police have a warning for pet owners near Stony Plain tonight after two dogs were found shot by a pellet gun earlier this week.
A person walking in the area Wednesday night found one of the dogs, a terrier named Brownie, dead in a ditch, a short distance from its home. Cpl. Colette Zazulak of Stony Plain RCMP says there was an apparent pellet gun wound to the dog’s neck.
“We can’t say that that’s what killed the dog. That being said, we were investigating in the area when we received another complaint from a homeowner who advised her dog had also been shot with a pellet dog.”
That call came from a pet owner near Carvel Park. Her border collie/lab cross survived the shooting, but did receive a wound on the upper part of its back.

“We can confirm that it was just with a pellet gun and clearly that’s a criminal offence and an inappropriate thing for anyone to be doing,” says Zazulak.
Barry Altheim, the owner of the dog who was killed, is shocked that something like this could happen, especially in a place where he thought his dogs could have a better life than in the city.
“That’s why we have have dogs out in the country here. It’s because they’ve got the freedom to run and enjoy life, just like we do. Obviously she didn’t get to enjoy hers.”
“She was full of life, bouncing around all the time, just a real part of the family.”

After having to bury the four-year-old dog Thursday evening, Altheim says he’ll be locking up his remaining two dogs when he leaves his house from now on.
And RCMP are advising others to do the same.
“We basically just want to let pet owners know to be careful. Not to let their pets roam. They can be on their property but we don’t want to see them roaming for fear of vehicles and all kinds of things as well.”
Back in May, RCMP was receiving reports of other dog issues about 20 minutes north of this area.
Anyone with information about any of these incidents is asked to call Spruce Grove/Stony Plain RCMP at 780-968-7200 or 780-962-2222 or Crime Stoppers at 1.800.222.8477 (TIPS).
