City meets with residents affected by riverbank slope

SASKATOON – A section of the riverbank in the Nutana neighbourhood remains unstable.

The city of Saskatoon is seeking a solution and last night it met with the eight affected homeowners on 11th Street and Saskatchewan Crescent.

Voluntary evacuation notices were issued by the city last week, but so far no residents have evacuated.

“Everyone is concerned about safety also concerned about the fact of some of what are solutions. We can only come forward with solutions once we have data,” said Fire Chief Dan Paulsen, Saskatoon Fire and Protective Services.

In 2012, the slope moved 16 to 18 inches and this year it’s come down about 1.3 meters.

The city is asking people to evaluate their property’s structure and make sure it’s safe to continue living there.

“We did some calculations Tuesday, it’s approximately 66 million pounds of soil moving with the depth and the width of that soil which is approximately the weight of 500 houses. It’s important even though it’s not moving excessively fast, it’s moving fast in the rate of a slope failure, faster then we’d like to see,” said Rob Frank, strategic services manager.

One of the affected residents at the meeting on Tuesday said it went well.
