No injuries in Newfoundland air cadet bus crash on slush-covered highway

HERMITAGE, N.L. – RCMP say poor road and weather conditions were the main factors in a bus crash Friday in southern Newfoundland involving a group of young army cadets.

Sgt. Boyd Merrill says there were 17 people aboard the school bus – including 15 cadets between the ages of 13 and 17, their instructor and the driver – when the vehicle left the highway and landed on its side in a ditch.

Merrill says the bus was travelling slowly before the accident, but it was snowing and raining at the time and a significant amount of slush had built up on the highway.

RCMP say several of the cadets sustained minor injuries in the crash, including bumps and bruises, but the driver suffered a broken arm.

They were taken to hospital for treatment and released the same day.

The group had been travelling to a weekend event in Hermitage.

Merrill says no charges will be laid.
