TORONTO — A trio of Canadians are among the nominees at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, which will be handed out Aug. 25 in Brooklyn, New York.
Toronto rapper Drake’s “Started from the Bottom” is up for Best Hip-Hop Video against videos by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis ft. Ray Dalton, Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole. Also nominated is “F**kin Problems” by A$AP Rocky featuring Drake, 2 Chainz and Kendrick Lamar.
“Started from the Bottom” was also nominated in the Best Direction category. The video was directed by Toronto’s Director X, whose real name is Julien Christian Lutz.

Toronto’s The Weeknd earned a nod as one of the Artists to Watch and the video for his song “Wicked Games” is included in the Best Visual Effects category.
London, Ont.-born Justin Bieber’s collaboration with will.i.am, “#thatPOWER,” is up for Best Choreography against videos by Chris Brown, Ciara, Bruno Mars and Jennifer Lopez feat. Pitbull.
The video for “Feel This Moment” — a song co-written by Canada’s Chantal Kreviazuk — is nominated in the Best Collaboration category.
Going into the MTV Video Music Awards with the most nominations this year are Justin Timberlake and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, with six each, followed by Bruno Mars with four.
P!nk, Robin Thicke, Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift are among the multiple nominees.
Artist to Watch nominees include Twenty One Pilots, Zedd feat. Foxes, Austin Mahone and Iggy Azalea.
