Residents pack prison information meetings in South Okanagan

South Okanagan residents had a chance to view eight potential sites for a provincial correctional facility at a meeting last night in Summerland.

Summerland has put forward five possible sites while Penticton has presented three.

Those sites include:

Summerland

  • 40 acres at the BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure Gravel Pit
  • 64 acres of private property on Gilman Road
  • 37 acres of municipal property on Fenwick Road
  • 50 acres of municipal property northwest of Landfill
  • 24 acres of municipal property at Cartwright Mountain
  • Penticton

  • 16 acres of municipal property at City Works Yard
  • 64 acres of private property at Cantex Gravel Pit
  • 147 acres of municipal property on Campbell Mountain
  • After the public forums are held, the three communities will get together at the end of the week to see which, if any, sites they’ll recommend to the province.

    Submissions must be presented to the Provincial Government by April 1st.

    Tonight’s information sessions is planned for 6:00 p.m. at the Penticton Trade and Convention Centre. The Penticton Indian Band will hold its meeting Wednesday at 7p.m. at the Band’s Community Hall.
