MOOSE JAW – The Moose Jaw Humane Society has a very serious message for dog owners after an incident earlier this week.  They’re drawing attention to a band, sometimes called a “cheerio” which is used in castrating livestock, saying it should not be used to neuter your dog.

Abandoned dog, Freddie was brought in to the Moose Jaw Humane Society and then sent to the animal clinic on Monday.  He needed immediate surgery for a very serious infection resulting from an attempt to neuter him.  He is now recovering, but vets at the clinic said they see cases like this every year.

“Never, ever, ever do this to your dog. It’s painful. It’s a mess. It never turns out pretty. It takes a long time – it’s just not designed for a dog,” said Annette Lorenz, a registered veterinary technician at the clinic.

She added a simple castration costs around $200 and is part of owning a pet. In comparison, emergency surgery can cost pet owners twice that amount.
