Saskatchewan SPCA raises alarm over home neutering of dogs

The Saskatchewan SPCA is concerned about an increase in the number of dogs seriously injured after being neutered by their owners.

Five cases in the province have been reported to the agency.

The society says in the majority of cases, rubber “Elastrator” bands have been used to cut off the blood supply to the testicles of dogs.

The Saskatchewan Veterinary Medical Association says this is not an acceptable method of sterilizing dogs as it can cause extreme pain and result in serious complications including self-mutilation by the dog and secondary infection.

“Often, the cost of medical care and surgical repair necessary following this attempt at neutering far outstrip the cost of a proper surgical castration done by a veterinarian,” said Dr. Judy Currie from the SVMA.

The Saskatchewan SPCA says owners who home-neuter their dogs may be charged under the Animal Protection Act or the Criminal Code.
