Local Rocket wins top award

Tyson Barrie of the WHL Kelowna Rockets has been honoured as the Western Hockey League’s defenseman of the year.

He beat out Michael Stone of the Calgary Hitmen for the honour.

The Victoria native set a scoring record for Rockets defensemen this year.

The team’s MVP finished the regular season with 72 points, including 19 goals.

Barrie joined the Rockets when he was just 16 and quickly established a reputation as an excellent two-way player with great offensive capabilities.

He is a draft choice of the Colorado Avalanche and will be at the team’s training camp this fall.

Two other Rockets were up for WHL awards Wednesday.

Shane McColgan, a California native, lost out to Ryan Nugent-Hopkins of Red Deer in balloting for Rookie of the Year.

Spencer Main of North Vancouver was a finalist for Scholastic Player of the Year.

Adam Lowry of the Calgary Hitmen captured that award.
