McKinley Landing sawmill fire

Kelly Hayes/Global Okanagan

KELOWNA — Flames coming from a sawmill in McKinley Landing drew an immediate response from two fire departments.

The calls came in at around 2:30 Wednesday afternoon of flames coming from a large wood pile.

Flames were shooting from a stack of rough cut wood placed next to the mill’s saw when fire fighters arrived.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

The flames were isolated to the area where the fire started.

The official cause is unknown at this time.

“The gentleman that owns the place was here up to an hour prior to us getting the call. So we’re still in the investigation mode as to what was going on,” says Kelowna Platoon Captain, Tim Light.

There were no fire hydrants in the area so the water had to be trucked in.

Kelowna and the McKinley Landing fire departments responded to the blaze.

The fire danger in the Central Okanagan is moderate to high right now, but with the recent hot weather it is rising.
