Toronto – Farmers from the GTA work endless hours to try and bring high-quality produce to table’s across Ontario, which is why they make the trip to Nathan Phillips Square for Fresh Wednesday’s.
One family of farmers from Port Perry travels to Toronto each week to sell their produce.
“We sell over thirty different crops and we like to sell directly to the customer’s, build a relationship with the customer’s they get to know us and how we grow our food,” Kelty Mckay of Willowtree Farms said.
Chrissy Barnett worked with Willowtree Farms all through high school, university and returned to the job after graduating.
She thinks young people should consider farming as a viable career.
“I think it’s pretty important because food is something we all need to eat and lately a lot of land is being developed and not as much is being saved for farming but there’s more and more people on the planet and they still need to be fed.”
For some, like Debbie Hedgacero, Fresh Wednesday’s beats out any grocery story.
“I like fresh products, I like to support Ontario Farmers instead of going to a super market it’s all fresh you can just pick what you want, it’s good quality food and the strawberries aren’t on steroids they’re just perfect strawberries.”
