Bus pass program for low-income residents in Sask. extended

A program which provides discounted bus passes for low-income people in Saskatchewan has been renewed until September, 2011.

The Discounted Bus Pass Program received $1.4 million from the province to continue the program in Regina, Saskatoon, Moose Jaw, Prince Albert, Yorkton and Swift Current.

Regina will receive $650,000 in renewed funding.

Anyone receiving assistance from the provincial government, such as disability support or a training allowance, is eligible to receive discounted bus passes.

The program began on November 1, 2003 in Regina and extended to other cities in 2007. Around 63,000 monthly discounted passes are sold in Saskatchewan through the program.

With the funding, the province’s contribution will be increased by 17 per cent to $21 for bus passes for low-income residents. Those who qualify for the program currently pay $15 to $20 for monthly bus passes.
