TORONTO – The city of Toronto is cleaning up Tuesday, after a record-smashing rainfall soaked the city and nearby suburbs, leaving cars stranded and widespread power outages.
Toronto’s transit was swamped much of Monday evening, as the rain began falling during the busy evening commute period. Subway service was temporarily halted but service had resumed on most of the system by early Tuesday.
Here’s a “by the numbers” look at the 2013 Toronto summer storm:
35,000 – Number of customers who remained without power early Tuesday, according to Toronto Hydro.
300,000 – Number of Toronto Hydro customers that where were without power at the height of the power outage Monday.
126mm – Amount of rain reported at Pearson International Airport throughout Monday, breaking the previous single-day rainfall record for the city set back on Oct. 15, 1954, when hurricane Hazel dumped 121 mm of rain.
97 mm – Amount of rain reported in downtown Toronto.
1,400 – Number of people caught by the flooding aboard a northbound GO Transit train (at Bayview and Pottery Rd).
80 – Percentage of Mississauga—a suburb of Toronto with a population of over 700,000—that was without power at the height of the storm.
7 – Approximate number of hours it took to ferry everyone stuck on the GO Train to dry ground aboard small inflatable boats.
