Sask. to unveil new one-part driver’s licence Thursday

The new one-part Saskatchewan driver’s licence will be unveiled by Tim McMillan, the minister responsible for SGI on Thursday.

It was announced in 2009 the province would join the ranks of other North American jurisdictions and move to a one-part driver’s licence and I.D.

Saskatchewan residents will receive their new licence starting January 1, 2011 when they renew their expired two-part licence. Customers can pay either $100 to renew for five years, or opt to continue paying $25 each year.

The new licence will have added features to help law enforcement and reduce the chance of identity theft. They will cost the government $6 million and save the revenue fund around $3.5 million.

During the implementation year, drivers will receive the licence with renewal terms that range from one to five years, based on when their current photo I.D. card expires. Licence fees will be pro-rated based on the length of the term.
