Building permit values decline in Saskatchewan

OTTAWA – The value of building permits issued in Saskatchewan for May declined from the same period last year.

Figures released by Statistics Canada say the overall value of permits declines by 29.6 per cent to $277.4 million from $394 million in May 2012.

On a monthly basis, permit values were up 14.2 per cent from April, led by an increase in non-residential permits, which were up 133.7 per cent to $138.9 million from $59.2 million.

Stats Can says the increase is attributed to higher construction intentions for mining buildings in the province.

Residential permits were down 24.3 per cent from April, to $138.9 million from $183.6 million.

Saskatchewan had the second largest drop in the country for multi-family dwellings.

In Saskatoon, the value of permits dropped 44.7 per cent from the same period last year to $108.6 million from $196.4 million.

On a monthly basis, the value was down 4.7 per cent.
