A B.C. family is warning the public after a brazen cougar snatched their beloved dog off a porch near Telegraph Cove on Vancouver Island last weekend.

Sharon Johnson said her son Chad, 36, and his friend were staying at a cabin in EastBay on Canada Day when the attack happened.

The two men were on the porch with the family’s four Shih Tzus at around 11 p.m. when the cougar jumped right between the two men and grabbed one of the dogs.

The cougar came so close to the men its tail hit their legs as it grabbed the little dog named “Nana” and ran away. They never saw their dog again.

“It happened so fast. They didn’t have a chance to do anything,” Johnson said. “The cougar was incredibly brazen to come onto a deck like that between two big men with all the lights on in the house.”

Johnson is concerned that the cougar poses a serious risk to children and families who may be camping or visiting the popular eco-tourism area.

“I don’t want to see a child get killed,” she said. “Something has to happen because once the cat has found its prey that easy it’s not going to stop.”

The family contacted conservation officers but nothing has been done about the cougar, which Johnson said is likely an older cat that has been noted in the area before.

Although nothing can replace Nana, Johnson hopes her tragic story will save other pets and children from the cougar.

“Nana was a love sponge that girl. All that little girl wanted to do was be loved. We rescued her from a breeding place and we’ve had her for 13 years,” Johnson said.

“For her to go like this … if I can save a child that’s what she would have wanted.”
