Crown seeks 3 years of jail time in Poon trial

The Crown is seeking three years for the Regina doctor convicted of sexually assaulting two female patients.

Poon, 60, was convicted of two counts of sexual assault and acquitted on another four counts.

The court listened to victim impact statements Monday, one from a female victim who was sexually assaulted by Dr. Poon.

"He stole my dignity, my self-esteem, my sense of worth," she said.

The other victim impact statement was put into writing and read by the Crown.

Poon also addressed the court today.

"My heartfelt reget is that you were my patient for five years and I failed you," he said to a victim. "I apologize."

Crown prosecutor Connie Hottinger argued Dr. Poon should get a minimum of three years in prison and be placed on the sex offender registry.

Dr. Poon’s defence argued against putting him on the registry.

A judge is expected to take all this information and return with a decision Wednesday.

Outside of the court, the woman who read her victim impact statement told Global News she thought Dr. Poon’s apology was "pathetic" and "insulting," adding it’s too late to apologize.

It’s been a tumultuous career for Dr. Poon. The local doctor moved to Canada from Hong Kong when he was 17.

Poon earned his pharmacy degree from the University of Alberta and worked in Calgary for a number for a number of years. Failing to get into medicine at the U of A, Poon went to medical school in India before returning to Canada and interning at the Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon.

Poon began working as a general practitioner in 1983, and by 2004 was managing six clinics in Regina, including the Golden Mile Medical Clinic.

During the trial, the jury heard allegations of rubbing and touching during breast exams, pelvic exams and touching of the women’s breasts and vaginas during other tests.

He is also facing two more sexual assault charges still to go to trial.
