Fire crews investigate fire in northeast Regina

A smoke detector is being blamed for not alerting two men to a fire at a home in northeast Regina Saturday morning.

Around 10:15 a.m. a neighbour to the Toronto Street home called 9-1-1 after seeing smoke coming from the back entrance of the house. When crews arrived on scene, they found two men inside the home.

Both were treated at the scene by EMS and released, but City of Regina Fire Marshall Albert Headrick says it serves as a reminder to ensure smoke detectors are in good working condition.

“There is a hard wired smoke detector in the house, but unfortunately it was disengaged,” Headrick said. “If the neighbour didn’t notice the smoke penetrating through the rear of the house, this could have been a more serious situation and possibly might have had some casualties.”

There is no word on what caused the blaze, and fire officials continue to investigate.
