Some Saskatchewan residents will be covered if they need dental implants starting July 1.
Health Minister Don McMorris announced on Thursday that implants will be covered if someone has a benign or malignant tumour and congenital defects, which includes cleft palate and metabolic disorders.
“Expanding coverage to include dental implants will lead to a more patient-centred approach and will improve the patient experience for those facing this tough situation,” McMorris said.
Initial insertion of dental implants will be covered but ongoing maintenance will not. Those getting implants for cosmetic reasons will also not be covered.
The addition coverage will cost over $350,000 a year, which would make the province’s coverage one of Canada’s most generous.
