SYDNEY, N.S. – Nova Scotia’s Department of Natural Resources says it’s been getting more calls this year about black bears roaming parts of Cape Breton.

Andy Pyke, a wildlife technician with the department, says bear sightings aren’t new in Victoria and Inverness counties.

But he says they’ve typically been more rare within the Cape Breton Regional Municipality.

He says the department usually receives about three or four reports a year, but in recent weeks Pyke says he’s had about seven calls regarding bears in the municipality.

Pyke says the animals have been targeting garbage cans, compost bins and barbecues.

Sightings have been reported in Donkin, River Ryan, South Bar, near Louisbourg and on the highway between Sydney and Glace Bay.

Pyke says there are several things homeowners can do to avoid an unwanted encounter with a bear, including cleaning their barbecues after using them, keeping garbage locked up, and ensuring all pet food remains indoors.
