Grieving mother behind ‘Justice for Geo’ speaks to Global News

EDMONTON – It’s been just over six weeks since two-year-old son Geo Mounsef was killed in what his mother Sage Morin has described as every parent’s worst nightmare.

Morin and her family were getting ready to enjoy a dinner at Ric’s Grill in Edmonton’s south side on May 19, when an SUV suddenly drove through the patio, pinning her son Geo against a concrete wall, fatally injuring him.

Richard Suter faces four charges including impaired operation causing death. And although he hasn’t entered a plea or been convicted, Morin and her family have started the “Justice for Geo” campaign for tougher impaired driving sentences.

“Definitely anything more than it is now is a great place to start,” she says, adding that she would eventually like to see a minimum mandatory sentence of 5 years for impaired driving causing death and serious injury.

“I’m a realist, I realize that it might take up to ten years from now to see any real changes from this, but like I said, I’m not going anywhere, I’m here for the long haul.”

Morin plans to take her campaign all the way to Prime Minister Stephen Harper. She admits, though, that Justice for Geo isn’t going to be found in a courtroom, or on Parliament Hill.

More than anything, the mother wants her son’s legacy to live on.

“I know every parent has this feeling like their child is so special and Geo – I know that Geo was so special,” she says. “I would look at him and I was excited to know that the world would be a better place with him in it. And now as his mother, I feel I need to make the world a better place in his honour.”

Next week, Monster Pro Wrestling is holding a fundraising event to honour the little boy, who loved wrestling with his dad George.

The family also has a free children’s party planned in Geo’s honour to thank the community. It will be held at Victoria Park on July 13th. For more information visit justiceforgeo.org or the Justice for Geo Facebook page.
