But the aircraft, which departed from Gillam with only the pilot on board, didn’t return later in the day as scheduled.

The Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre at Canadian Forces Base Trenton, Ont., says a C-130 Hercules aircraft from CFB Winnipeg began searching the area Monday evening.

The company that owns the helicopter was also expected to have two of its own choppers join the search.

Gillam is about 1,100 kilometres north of Winnipeg.
