TORONTO – Metrolinx officials and Toronto Transit Commission CEO Andy Byford are scheduled to meet Tuesday to clarify the city’s position regarding Scarborough’s disputed rapid transit line.
Councillors voted last year to go ahead with a plan to build an above-ground light rail line to replace the ageing Scarborough Rapid Transit (SRT).

But in May, city council contradicted its committed by voting to support the extension of the Bloor-Danforth subway line through to McCowan Road.
On Friday, the provincial transit agency’s chief executive Bruce McCuaig wrote a letter to the city stating construction work on the SRT will be stopped if Toronto officials don’t clarify their position by August 2, 2013.
According to the Toronto Star, the two sides will meet to examine the differences in cost estimates regarding the upgrade.
Replacing the Scarborough RT will cost $1.8 billion, but the TTC says building a subway would only cost $500 million more. Metrolinx estimates the underground option to be at $925 million.
