Calgary Farmers Market given the thumbs up on new home

The Calgary Farmers’ Market has received city approval to move to a new home. City planners gave the green light Thursday, but approving a development permit to relocate the Market to Blackfoot Centre, 510 – 77th Avenue SW.

"Receiving city approval is a huge milestone," said Ken Aylesworth, General Manager of the Calgary Farmers’ Market. "With the City of Calgary on board, we are ready to break ground and begin building a better future in our permanent home."

The Market’s application to move to the new location received one appeal last month from a local business regarding concerns about parking and traffic flow, but the City and Market has since worked with the business to come up with a solution that will please all parties.

The Market receive approval from vendors to move the market to it’s new location in late 2009. It has been working closely with architects and interior designers to make sure the new location preserves the open-air, community-style feeling that Calgarians have enjoyed at its Currie Barracks location.

The official move date is not yet known, although the Market has secured a long-term lease on the building.

The Calgary Farmers’ market will remain open, year round, at the Currie Barracks location until November 30th, 2010.
