Police said a patrol unit was near the Sage Creek Liquor Mart when a robbery took place. Several suspects stole alcohol while threatening staff, and sped off in a stolen car.

Police chased the car to Lagimodiere Boulevard near Fermor Avenue at about 5:30 p.m.

While they were trying to arrest the people in the car, police ended up shooting the female driver and taking several other teens into custody.

The girl was rushed to hospital in critical condition, where she was later pronounced dead.

Police said the stolen vehicle had also been used in a robbery at the Transcona Liquor Mart and a hit and run near Keewatin Street.

The Independent Investigation Unit, Manitoba’s independent police watchdog, has assumed responsibility for the investigation.

Four teens, aged 15 and 16, face a list of charges, including robbery, motor vehicle theft, and disguise with intent, among many others.

Less than 12 hours later, officers were called to a home in the 300 block of Anderson Avenue for a report of a man with a gun during what police called a domestic incident.

A 36-year-old man inside the house was shot by police and sent to hospital in critical condition, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said the IIU has been notified, and the Homicide Unit continues to investigate.

Original story:

One person is in hospital after an officer-involved shooting Wednesday night that shut down Lagimodiere Boulevard near Fermor Avenue and brought more than a dozen police cars to the scene.

Police had no word on the person’s condition and said a number of people were taken into custody.

One police car and another vehicle were seen on the median with several cruisers surrounding them. A damaged truck was also stopped at the scene.

“Our focus is on the vehicle that’s on top of the curb. There’s a number of other vehicles that were struck as well during this incident – they weren’t involved otherwise,” said WPS Const. Jay Murray.

One witness said they saw a chase with at least 8-10 police cars involved.

“[It’s] certainly a risk to the public, whenever something like this happens. Police officers are trained quite well to bring these situations under control as quick as they can,” Murray said.

“Sometimes, that involves the use of force, unfortunately.”

Police were holding the scene for the Independent Investigation Unit, Manitoba’s police watchdog, said Murray.

“The homicide unit will look at any acts beforehand that led up to this incident – any criminal acts conducted by the individuals. The IIU will look at the portion of the officer-involved shooting.”

The homicide unit is standard for all officer-involved shootings and is not an indicator of the condition of the hospitalized person, Murray added.

Police were still at the scene Thursday morning. They are expected to release more details on Thursday.
