Saskatchewan’s 2013 crops in the ground and growing

SASKATOON – According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Saskatchewan farmers have pulled through some wet conditions and completed seeding the 2013 crops.

This week’s crop report says the majority of crops are in fair to excellent condition and farmers are now busy controlling weeds and getting ready for haying.

Some areas in southeast Saskatchewan remain unseeded due to flooding.

Heavy rains have caused some damage and producers could use some warm temperatures to dry out fields.  In-crop spraying operations have been delayed for most farmers due to excess moisture.

The ministry says topsoil moisture on crop land is rated as 30 per cent surplus, 68 per cent adequate and 2 per cent short across Saskatchewan.

At this time last year, seeding was also essentially finished; however haying had already begun in some areas. Most of the crops were at normal developmental stages and were in fair to good condition

According to a study released by Statistics Canada in March, almost11 per cent of canola area was anticipated to decrease this season.

Intentions also showed spring wheat acreage would rise 17 per cent and durum wheat would increase to 4.4 million acres.
