TORONTO — Celebrities were among millions of Americans who took to social media on Wednesday to herald the U.S. Supreme Court’s decisions on the Defence of Marriage Act (DOMA) and California’s ban on same-sex marriages.
“Historic day,” tweeted actor Leonardo DiCaprio. “Well done.”
On the official Twitter account for the TV series Game of Thrones, the message read: “#MarriageEquality for all in the realm.”
Famous Canadians also weighed in. Calgary musicians Tegan and Sara called it a “huge day” for America, tweeting: “CONGRATS EVERYONE!!!”
Halifax actress Ellen Page tweeted: “DOMA is struck down! Snap!”
Here’s a look at how some other famous folks reacted to the news:
Let’s hear it for the general progress of the human mind. With a beautiful sweep of sweet justice’s blind hand we move forward. We correct the laws made hastily out of fear. I look forward to exercising my American civil liberties and getting fully, completely and legally married this year to my true love of over three years, Linda Wallem.
Victory for marriage in California as #Prop8 is struck down. Small but substantial steps toward #MarriageEquality for all!
We are all equal and have the right to love. So proud to be an American.

Don’t wanna traffic in stereotypes but let’s be real: I’m gonna love a gay wedding … No one be shocked if I get married and pregnant with a daughter today in a slightly premature fit of joy.
If you’re gay married in California your gay marriage is now legal. Good. #allmarriageisabitgay
