WINNIPEG – Just days before his government increases the PST from 7 to 8 per cent, the Premier is defending the tax hike.

Tuesday morning Greg Selinger reminded Manitobans that the money will fix roads.

The NDP also sent out pamphlets to thousands of mailboxes.

“Our vision is very clear and positive and people need to know it could be different,” said Greg Selinger.

One side the ad defends the PST hike.  On the other, it attacks Opposition Leader Brian Pallister and his ties to the Filmon government of the 90’s.

“The approach of going back to the way he did business when he was in the Filmon cabinet in the 90’s of cutting things and laying off people did not get good result,” said Selinger.

“The government is afraid and what they are doing of course is using the old boogie man tactic,” said Pallister, the leader of the Progressive Conservative Party.

Recent polls have shown support for Selinger is eroding. Pollsters say it’s no surprised the taxpayer funded ads were sent out.

“The NDP has had a bit of a rough ride I think in terms of public opinion over the last few weeks and here is something that I think they decided to counter act that a little bit by sending this out,” said Curtis Brown, a senior research associate at Probe Research.
