EDMONTON – The Edmonton Public School Board named current managing director of Human Resources as its new Superintendent of Schools Tuesday afternoon.
The announcement was made at 5:30 pm Tuesday at the Centre for Education.
Darrel Robertson was appointed to the top post in the District, succeeding Edgar Schmidt, who served as Superintendent for six years.
“The Board is incredibly excited to appoint Mr. Robertson as Superintendent,” said Sarah Hoffman, Board Chair, in a release. “He brings a great amount of experience and expertise to this vital role as well as great passion for public education – that’s a winning combination for our students and our District.”

Robertson’s career spans 17 years and includes roles as a teacher, curriculum co-ordinator, assistant principal, principal, supervisor, director and managing director.
“I’m very honoured to be appointed to this position and look forward to advancing Edmonton Public Schools’ standing as a leader in education,” said Mr. Robertson. “My entire career has been about supporting the success of students. I’m focused on building strong relationships with staff, parents and community partners, so that we can provide all students with a high quality education that allows them to meet their potential.”
Mr. Robertson will assume his duties on August 12.
